Georgia Northwestern Technical College realizes that some students need financial assistance in order to attend school. Students at Georgia Northwestern Technical College can look to several areas for financial aid: Federal Pell Grants, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), Academic Competiveness Grant (ACG), GA LEAP Program, Federal Work Study, HOPE Scholarship Program (most Georgia residents will qualify), Veterans Benefits, and Workforce Investment Act (WIA).
To be eligible for financial aid, a student must have a high school diploma or equivalent (GED) or demonstrate ability to benefit from the course of study. To receive federal funds and HOPE funds, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid at www.fafsa.ed.gov; or to apply for HOPE funds only a student must complete the GSFAPP at www.gacollege411.org.
The HOPE Grant pays for diploma and certificate programs. HOPE Scholarship pays for degree programs. Effective summer quarter 2004, a HOPE cap hour limit became effective. Students can receive the HOPE grant for certificate and diploma programs up to a total of 95 quarter hours. A student can receive HOPE Scholarship funds up to 190 hours of course work. All degree students should check with the Financial Aid Office and/or Registrar’s Office to see if they qualify for HOPE Scholarship funds.
The financial aid academic year begins with the Summer Quarter. Students will be mailed an award letter after they have registered for classes. The award letter will list the amounts of financial aid and the different types of financial aid that the student may be eligible to receive. However, financial aid funds will only be disbursed (paid) for hours taken in the student’s program of study. Again, the award letter may show the total amount a student may be eligible to receive; however the Financial Aid Office will only pay(disburse) for hours taken in the student’s major. All classes taken that are not a part of the student’s major will be the responsibility of the student. Therefore, students should always check the Georgia Northwestern Technical College Catalog that was in effect when he or she first entered the program to make sure their classes will be paid for. When in doubt, contact your Financial aid Advisor at any GNTC campus.
Note: ALL STUDENTS must reapply for financial aid each academic year. Please remember that this eligibility process takes about five to six weeks. The Financial Aid Office provides monthly financial aid workshops at least four to five months prior to the start of a new fiscal year.
