This week Georgia Northwestern Technical College (GNTC) is hosting the Young Scholars Program for rising eighth-grade students from Rome Middle School. Through the program, students take part in a variety of hands-on learning activities that provides a head start for the upcoming school year and offers insight into future career opportunities.
This year’s Young Scholars Program focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education and how it relates to various careers.
Teachers from Rome City Schools, and instructors and staff from GNTC, are working together to provide a quality, intellectually stimulating summer program for the week of June 12-15. Approximately 50 students from Rome Middle School are spending the week at GNTC engaged in various STEM programs and tours of the college.
“We are focusing on STEM-based learning to prepare the students for future careers,” said Holly Amerman, STEM and gifted coordinator for Rome City Schools. “This is the time in their lives where they may pick the path for their future careers.
The students that attend the program are nominated by their teachers or principal for their excellent academic performance, outstanding character, and positive attitude.
Activities during the week include hands-on learning projects in Process Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Aerospace Engineering.
“STEM will be helpful to the students no matter what career path they chose,” said Amerman.
